I think people are addressing the problem of homelessness in the wrong way. There are 2 groups: some are working or single parents. They are productive citizens but can’t afford housing. They should be given housing.
Others are not productive citizens. They might be drug addicts, alcoholics, mentally ill, etc. If they’re using drugs or doing something else illegal, they should be (after 1 warning) arrested and given a choice of let’s say 2 years of prison or 1 year of a 360-degree treatment sentence (not freedom) that includes physical and mental health care, life skills, job skills. I don’t agree with simple harm reduction but think we should proactively help them get to a point where they are productive citizens.

Not s solution to homelessness but a way to help them. Plant fruit and nut trees and berry bushes everywhere there is a high population of homeless. At least they wont go hungry!

In a lot of ways we don’t have a homeless problem per se. We have these problems:
–labor exploitation (jobs that don’t pay enough)
–housing shortage (make it easier to build houses)
–drug-addicted and mentally ill people (I don’t know how we’re going to fund it, but we need to make it easier to involuntarily admit someone to a psychiatric facility, and not just kick them out after a week, in some cases when they are begging to stay)
–lack of care for people with profound disabilities, including veterans (while obviously being attentive to fraud, we need housing options for people who cannot work and in many cases cannot live independently)
–poor domestic violence shelters (we need shelters that allow women with sometimes noisy or disturbed children, and pets)
I’m struggling to think of any homeless person I’ve ever met who didn’t fall into one of those categories.

It would be much better if this board functioned like a regular discussion board. Love the idea but it feels like a siphon. To be innovative people need to discuss ideas. This feels WAY wrong…like you take the time to share an idea but you are speaking to a two way mirror and no-one answers.
Thanks for your comment. The problem is that if there was a discussion feature, the 2 of us would be spending too much time moderating. We moderate all comments. We want to avoid arguments and anti-democratic posts. This isn’t a social media platform. Rather, it’s a place to document your ideas, which we hope will get the attention of candidates and others who share them. You can always create a new post respond to an existing post that way.
